This proposal seeks to revitalize Barcelona’s historic center by transforming and repurposing the old city walls of Barcino. Located in an area facing neglect and housing a large displaced population, the project aims to integrate the enduring strength of the walls with the needs of the neighborhood and existing urban fabric.
Strategically positioned between two main activity hubs, the proposal replaces segregated mental health establishments with inclusive community care. It introduces a 24-hour community center, housing, a social club, work co-ops, and recreational facilities to support social integration and accessibility.
The design draws inspiration from its surroundings, incorporating elements that echo the evolution of the walls, such as uneven slats and spacing. This slat system extends into the building’s interior, complemented by traditional Catalan architectural features like thick wooden window frames.
By merging the old and the new, the project aspires to bring renewed life, safety, and social acceptance to the community while enhancing overall living conditions.
